Among subjects of the documentary, famous figures of Krakow’s dance community appear: Anatol Kocyłowski – an expert in the field of Polish national dances; Agnieszka Gorczyca –a dance and ballet historian, documenting life and work of Janina Strzembosz; Marta Mirocka – a dancer, choreographer and the star of the Krakow Opera and Operetta; Jan Kolasa – an assistant of Janina Strzembosz and a dancer in her dance troupe Ars Antiqua; Anna Morańska – an Ars Antiqua dancer and Janina Strzembosz’s personal physician; Romana Agnel – a dancer and choreographer, specializing in historical dance and in Indian Bharata Natyam dance. The film also presents Janina Strzembosz memorabilia, archival photographs and documents, including unpublished memoirs.
Janina Strzembosz, the dancer, dance teacher, pianist, conductor of operas, which were staged in Germany and France, director, author of music lectures on the Polish Radio in Lviev, spent the last 40 years of her life in Krakow. Here she worked for, among others, numerous theatres making choreography, as well as at the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in KrakĂłw, working on the gesture and movement of future actors. The significant part of her activities was pedagogy. For several dozen years she educated several generations of dancers, choreographers and dance instructors in Krakow. She passed on a lot to her students, not only the technique of Isadora Duncan, but also a passion for, e.g., historical dance, which became the subject of her research and discoveries. She died on December 21, 1991.
Janina Strzembosz, one of the most versatile Polish artists, who made an enormous contribution to shaping the art of dance in the 20th century, remains little-known in Poland. – Our film “Life for Dance” is a unique documentary, filling in the blanks in the history of Polish and European dance, the moving history of the great artist, who lived among us and who devoted her life to dance – underlines Romana Agnel, the director of the film.
