The production Metamorphoses. Cat in the Boots presents a new interpretation of the story we all know from the fairy tale by Charles Perrault. As the title suggests, every character undergoes some sort of transformation. An ordinary backyard cat, having received a pair of boots, becomes a wily factotum to his master, guiding him on his way from poverty to fame and fortune. Miller John, without a penny to his name, turns into the glamorous Marquis de Carabas. The ruthless sorcerer proudly displays his occult powers, transmuting himself into a lion and a mouse. Finally Charles Perrault himself, whom we know as a fabulist, puts on his boots and roams the king\'s domain as an intendent to Louis XIV. The dancers, too, undergo metamorphoses, as they put on the next costume and switch between impersonating peasants and courtiers.
The choreography by Pierre-François DollĂ© and IrĂšne Feste, as well as the staging by Romana Agnel, introduce us into the spectacular wolrd of the culture and imagination of the turn of the 18th century by intertwining baroque dances, commedia dell\'arte and modern pantomime. It is an attempt to create a new ballet in the baroque style, modelled after the performances staged at the court of Louis XIV â both in terms of the employed dance forms and the way of storytelling or conveying emotions. At the same time, the ageless themes of Perrault\'s fairy tale â e.g. the praise of friendship, loyalty and resourcefulness, as well as realizing one\'s dreams â are clearly visible throughout the performance.
The fairy-tale character of the show is underlined by the costumes and stage decorations by BoĆŒena PÄdziwiatr, inspired by the ballets from the times of Louis XIV. The production is completed by music by a French composer from the early 18th century, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, performed live! It means that during the opening night, the dancers will share the stage with the musicians of Early Music Ensemble \"La Bande de Chat BottĂ©\" under the direction of Anna Urszula Kucharska.
Through collaboration of established specialists in the fields of baroque arts and modern movement theatre, we hope to create the first version of Cat in the Boots which will be both true to the zeitgeist of Perrault\'s text and entertaining to the modern audience of all ages.
